***FENOMÉN ŠMOK***

Mimořádný večer Pražského komorního baletu věnovaný prof. Pavlu Šmokovi při příležitosti jeho nedožitých 90. narozenin (1927 - 2017), v rámci kterého bude premiérován stejnojmenný dokumentární portrét v režii Ondřeje Kepky. Uvedeny budou Šmokovy choreografie “Po zarostlém chodníčku” a “Holoubek” v obnoveném nastudování pod vedením Kateřiny Dedkové - Frankové. Jedinečné vystoupení připomene jednoho z nejvýznačnějších československých choreografů 20. století, zakladatele a dlouholetého uměleckého šéfa Pražského komorního baletu - PAVLA ŠMOKA.

Program večera vhodně doplní též videoprojekce zachycující cenné fotografie s Pavlem Šmokem, Lubošem Ogounem a Vladimírem Vašutem - zakladateli legendárního studia BALET PRAHA.

První řada cyklu „Po zarostlém chodníčku“ končí skladbou, kterou Janáček pojmenoval „Sýček neodletěl“. Motiv sýčka, podobně silný a dramatický jako známý motiv Beethovenovy Osudové symfonie, vnucuje jevištnímu ztvárnění nepřehlédnutelný tragický akcent.

Pavel Šmok k premiéře v roce 1998 uvedl: “Jednotlivé skladby cyklu nemají vzájemně žádnou výraznější dramaturgickou souvislost, až na to, že jde o niterné výpovědi autora. Scéna je však přece jen něco jiného, než koncertní síň a Janáček by nám snad odpustil, že jsme do díla vložili malý příběh, který je ostatně volně přejat z jiné jeho skladby.”

Dokument “Fenomén Šmok” nebude klasickým portrétem známého choreografa, nebude mapovat postupně všechna zásadní období Šmokova baletu, ale pokusí se vystihnout především podstatu jeho uměleckého myšlení, podstatu jeho umělecké inspirace. Ne nadarmo existuje v kuloárech pojem „šmokovství“, který se právě tento dokument pokusí objasnit. Autor a režisér projektu Ondřej Kepka využije i časosběrného materiálu, který natočil ještě během mistrova života, ale také nové rozhovory, které byly natočeny právě v letošním roce.

Holoubek je známou baladou Karla Jaromíra Erbena, na jejíž motivy napsal Antonín Dvořák v roce 1896 ve Žďáře tuto stejnojmennou symfonickou báseň. Mladá žena, která otráví svého manžela kvůli mladšímu nápadníkovi prožívá kruté výčitky svědomí, které ji nakonec doženou k sebevraždě.

Pavel Šmok k premiéře Holoubka v roce 1993 uvedl: „Dvořák ve svém Holoubkovi nesleduje Erbenovu baladu nijak ‚doslovně‘. Proto ani moje taneční ztvárnění ‚nevypráví‘ děj přímočaře. Zvolil jsem tu formu ‚divadla na divadle‘ a zasadil příběh do prostředí podivného masopustu: příběh se proměňuje jakoby ve vdovin zlý sen, noční můru, a něžný holoubek ve smrtihlava.“

Special evening of Prague Chamber Ballet dedicated to prof. Pavel Šmok commemorating 90 years since his birth (1927). This evening will feature a premiere of a documentary portrait bearing the same name directed by Ondřej Kepka, Šmok’s choreographies On an Overgrown Path and Wild Dove in a renewed production led by Kateřina Dedková - Franková. This unique event will commemorate one of the most outstanding Czechoslovak choreographers of the 20th century, the founder and long-time artistic leader of the Prague Chamber Ballet - PAVEL ŠMOK.

The evening will be accompanied by a video-projection of unique photographs showing Pavel Šmok, Luboš Ogoun and Vladimír Vašut, co-founders of the legendary dance studio BALLET PRAGUE.

The first part of the cycle On an Overgrown Path ends by a composition which Janáček titled Sýček neodletěl (The Barn Owl Has Not Flown Away). The motif of a barn owl, in his strength and dramatic effect not unlike the Beethoven’s Destiny Symphony, lends a distinctive tragic accent to the staging.

When the choreography was premiered in 1998, Pavel Šmok commented: “The individual compositions of the cycle have not got any stronger mutual dramaturgic connection apart from the fact that they all are internal testimonies of the composer. Dance stage is, nevertheless, quite different from a concert hall. Therefore, I believe that Janáček would forgive us for inserting a little story inside the performance which is loosely based on a motif of another of his compositions, anyway.”

The documentary portrait directed by Ondřej Kepka presents a compact, authentic material on Pavel Šmok collected over a period of time spanning the last years of his life which he spent at his weekend house in Nekoř. The film also includes many materials from the archives of the Czech Television and from personal archive of Pavel Šmok, the former members of Ballet Prague and Prague Chamber Ballet dance companies, his contemporaries and from archive of Prague Chamber Ballet.

Wild Dove is a famous ballad by Karel Jaromír Erben which inspired Antonín Dvořák to write a symphonic poem bearing the same name. He composed it in 1896 in Žďár. A young woman poisons her husband and marries a new, young suitor shortly afterwards. However, her guilty conscience drives her to suffering so unbearable that she commits suicide in the end.
When Wild Dove was premiered in 1993, Pavel Šmok commented: “In his Wild Dove, Dvořák does not follow Erben’s ballad in a literal way. And neither does my dancing rendition. It does not narrate the story in a linear manner. I decided for a ‘theatre in theatre’ form and set the story in the environment of a weird carnival procession: the story is kind of changing into the widow’s nightmare and the gentle dove into a death's-head hawkmoth.”
In his book “Pavel Šmok na přeskáčku”, Vladimír Vašut makes the following comment on Wild Dove:
I consider The Wild Dove one of Šmok’s top dramaturgical achievements (and there were not few such achievements in his career; considering that he wrote the vast majority of the librettos himself!). A crazy and frenetic flock of threatening and malicious-looking masked persons not only accompany the viewer through the plot of the story, not only divide it into various “real” and fantastic sequences, they also function as a certain bonding element gluing the story together in a manner not unlike the editing or fading feature in film-making. The masked persons always prepare the following scene, as if by coincidence. They do so by skilful manipulation with the stage props which change into symbolic signs.
